Everyone has a story to tell.

A blog is a great way to share your ideas, recipes, dreams, and much more.  It is also a great way to find your tribe.  Why are mommy blogs in particular so popular?  Because–at the end of the day, when the kids are *finally* in bed, and adult conversation is scarce, a blog is a perfect project to keep your mind occupied and your personal social media spaces free from overshares.  Because your husband will only listen to that ultimate diaper blowout story about a half a dozen times.  There is a community waiting for YOU.

YOU have a unique voice.

If you question whether you have anything valuable to contribute to the internet, think again.  No one else has walked in your shoes, or views the world quite like you do.  No one else has the ideas or the perspective that you do.  What excites you?  What lessons have you learned that could benefit another person?  See… superb blog fodder right there.   Someone, somewhere, needs to hear your story.

There is no time like the present.

If you have been toying with the idea of blogging, the time to pull the trigger is now.  There are a ton of blogging resources available–many of them for free.  You can also learn everything you need to know about blogging, social media, and email marketing from one of many, many online courses, books, and e-books.  Whether you prefer to learn the ropes on your own time or you are looking for a blueprint to follow, many options await you.

Now that you know why you should start a blog, let me tell you that actually starting one couldn’t be easier.



I have blogged for years, on LiveJournal, Blogger, and WordPress.com, and other platforms too obscure to mention.  When I decided to do a little something with this blogging thing, I chose to set up a self-hosted WordPress.org site.  I spent weeks choosing a niche, deliberating over my blog name, and I knew I would need a web hosting service.

The GrowBig plan gives you room to grow your blog, the ability to host multiple websites, and premium features added.  This is the plan I opted for.

The GoGeek plan is perfect for e-commerce and/or a larger website, and if you need advanced features.

Step 2:  Choose your domain.

You can register a new domain, or transfer an existing one.  Your website transfer is FREE with SiteGround.  Finally, make sure your information is correct before completing your purchase.

Step 3:  Review your info and complete your purchase.

After your review your hosting plan information, select any extra services you want (uncheck the boxes if you don’t want them), and you’re DONE!  More real talk here–I considered going with Bluehost, but one thing that sold me on SiteGround is that they offer discounted pricing on all three terms, and not just on the longer period.

Once you’ve signed up for hosting, you will need to select a platform to build your website.  There are tons of options available–Wordpress, Blogger, Wix, Squarespace, Weebly, etc.  I personally prefer WordPress.org, because it’s FREE, it’s endlessly customizable, it’s simple to monetize, and I personally like the interface.  WordPress comes with many attractive website themes (some free, some paid), or you could purchase a theme from a designer.

Rather than investing in just one theme,  I chose to go with Divi by Elegant Themes.  For a reasonable annual price, I have access to over 80 professionally designed themes and tons of free plugins.  As a die-hard DIYer, Divi allows me to design my own site using its incredibly user-friendly front end editor–without knowing anything at all about coding or web design.

If you’re headed down the design-your-own-blog route, here are a few quick tips to get you started:

  • Take advantage of the vast library of articles and video content provided by Elegant Themes specifically to guide you through the design process.
